THE UMOJI GLOBAL LIBRARY

UMOJI READING LIBRARY HUB

**You:** Hey everyone! Excited to share about Umoji Global Library, a unique program for adults re-entering society after incarceration. We’re more than just a book club; we're a community. **Participant 1:** Sounds interesting. What exactly do you do? **You:** We create a supportive space where we read books together as a podcast, fostering critical thinking. We also offer coaching, training, and mentorship to guide individuals on their reading journey. **Participant 2:** What kind of books do you focus on? **You:** We delve into social, global, and local issues. The goal is to expand perspectives, encouraging thoughtful discussions and personal discovery. We aim to empower individuals to build unity within their communities. **Participant 1:** So it's about more than just reading? **You:** Absolutely! It's about empowering individuals to become active, informed citizens. We believe in the power of shared reading to facilitate growth and positive change. We're building a network of critical thinkers and community builders.

UMOJI STUDY CIRCLE

**You:** Welcome to Umoji Global Library's reading program! We're thrilled to have you join us on this journey of discovery and empowerment. We've curated a diverse library of 100 books covering self-help, self-care, diversity management, business, law, mathematics, English, writing, communications, spirituality, and Christianity, among other vital topics. **Participant 1:** Wow, that’s a wide range! What kind of books have you read in the past? **You:** We've had some powerful experiences. For two years, we deeply explored "The Rich Get Richer and the Poor Get Prison," dissecting societal structures and their impact. We also journeyed through "The Prosperous Soul," focusing on personal growth and abundance, and learned coaching techniques with "Evoking Excellence Using Coaching as a Tool." Our previous cohort spent a year with "Strength to Love," engaging with Dr. King’s profound insights. **Participant 2:** That sounds intense and insightful. How does the reading process work? **You:** We read aloud, treating it as a therapeutic session, focusing on the frequency, vibration, and rhythmic beat of the words. It's a unique experience designed to engage all our senses. Before diving in, we share our initial perspectives and then delve into the book's content. **Participant 3:** And what about discussions? **You:** Discussions are the heart of our program. We construct a case for the book's arguments and a case against them, fostering critical thinking. We analyze insights, build projections for the future, and encourage everyone to share their unique perspectives. **Participant 1:** So, it's not just about reading, it's about action? **You:** Exactly! After our discussions, we develop creative action plans for community development. We aim to implement innovative and inventive approaches to inspire change. We want to be game-changers and champions in our global age. **Participant 2:** What books are you reading this year? **You:** This year, we are focusing on three carefully selected titles that will further our understanding of ourselves and our world. We are excited to embark on this journey with you. Each book is a tool for transformation, a catalyst for critical thinking, and a springboard for community action. **Participant 3:** This sounds like a powerful way to learn and grow. I'm excited to be a part of it. **You:** We're equally excited to have you! Umoji Global Library is more than just a reading program; it's a community dedicated to empowerment, unity, and positive change. Together, we'll explore, discuss, and build a better future.

OUR READING ANATOMY MODEL

**You:** Welcome to Umoji Study Circles! We're here to build bridges, foster understanding, and empower individuals to create positive change. Our core belief is that through shared reading and open dialogue, we can build stronger relationships and cultivate a more diverse and inclusive worldview. **Participant 1:** That sounds amazing. Can you tell us more about how it works? **You:** Absolutely. Our Study Circles are built on constructive activities like reading aloud, sharing perspectives, and actively listening to others. We've found that these simple actions can have a profound impact on how we see the world and each other. **Participant 2:** What's the connection to adults released from incarceration? **You:** Our program is specifically designed to support adults transitioning back into their communities after incarceration. We believe that their experiences hold valuable lessons, and by creating a supportive environment, we can help them heal, grow, and contribute positively to society. **Participant 3:** How does reading play a role in this? **You:** Reading is a powerful tool for communication and self-discovery. We use books to spark conversations about important topics, share inspirational messages, and speak life into one another. We also use it to identify and challenge toxic views and behaviors. **You:** Our theoretical framework is deeply rooted in building human connection and understanding. We use a multifaceted approach that incorporates several key models. **Participant 1:** What models do you use? **You:** We utilize the "Double Swing Communication Model," which emphasizes active listening and reciprocal sharing. It’s about building a balanced exchange of ideas, where everyone feels heard and valued. This model helps us navigate difficult conversations and build empathy. **Participant 2:** And Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs? **You:** Yes, Maslow's model is crucial. It helps us understand the fundamental needs of individuals and how to address them. By focusing on fulfilling these needs, we can create a foundation for personal growth and positive change. We conduct needs and motivation assessments to understand where each participant is, and what they need to move forward. **Participant 3:** How does this connect to your end goal? **You:** Our end goal is to empower individuals to become agents of change in their communities, businesses, and government. We want to foster a society where everyone feels valued and respected, regardless of their past experiences. We aim to unify people to develop their humanity, learn from their experiences, and heal what needs to be corrected, while embracing what needs to be embraced. **You:** The Umoji Library is a vital part of this process. It provides access to a diverse range of books that challenge us to think critically and expand our horizons. We curate titles that cover topics like self-help, diversity management, and social justice, all designed to inspire personal growth and community development. **Participant 1:** So, you're building a code of excellence? **You:** Exactly. Through our discussions and shared learning, we're developing a standard and code of excellence that guides our actions and interactions. We're learning to identify toxic views and behaviors, and replace them with constructive, empathetic, and inclusive approaches. **Participant 2:** What do you hope to see in the long term? **You:** We envision a world where individuals who have been incarcerated are seen as valuable members of society, with unique perspectives and talents to contribute. We hope to see a reduction in recidivism rates and an increase in opportunities for these individuals to thrive. **Participant 3:** It sounds like you're building a powerful community. **You:** We are. And we're inviting everyone to join us. By participating in Umoji Study Circles, you're not just reading books; you're contributing to a movement that's transforming lives and building a better future. We are building a global community, that is inclusive and supportive, and empowers everyone to be their best selves, and to utilize the lessons from their past to create a better future. The destination is unity, healing, and a transformed society.
